5 Surprising Benefits to Rock Climbing
Aug 22, 2018Earlier this week, the Nutrakey team embarked on an epic journey of indoor rock climbing! We visited Aiguille Rock Climbing Center, a 10,000 sq foot facility with walls up to 36 ft tall. It was challenging to say the least, but extremely fun.
We were very excited to learn that rock climbing has a few hidden benefits.
It’s not only a physical workout
Surprisingly, climbing is an excellent mental workout. Choosing the correct path involves a great deal of problem solving, patience, and analysis, especially when bouldering (a type of climbing done without equipment at lower heights). Climbers must carefully factor in the right amount of weight to balance between each rock and mentally judge the distance between two points. It’s no wonder why this sport is considered a brain booster!
It’s a great cardio workout
Contrary to what you may thing, climbing is actually great cardio. It’s been compared to climbing stairs or jogging and may burn over 700 calories per hour. This mixed in with the muscle and flexibility development from climbing makes it one of the most beneficial workouts out there.
It’s better with a friend
Climbing is especially fun when done with a friend. It’s interesting to see the different routes your partner chooses on the same climb. Working together towards finishing a route is a great experience to share with your friend and will build a level of trust. Challenging your friend on difficult routes is especially fun! Plus, knowing that you’ve burned calories while socializing makes that after-climb beer not sound so bad.
It may reduce stress
This one is very interesting. The amount of thinking involved with climbing makes little room for other thoughts to cloud your mind. You’ll notice that you will become so focused on the task at hand that bills and work become an afterthought.
It’s a great confidence booster
The thing about climbing is there’s always a harder route. As you continue to improve, you’ll be able to take on routes that you weren’t able to do before. Knowing that you’ve completed your goal is a great self-confidence booster.
